A BUILDING was evacuated after an electrical fire led to an emergency callout.

Firefighters rushed to a fire at a business on Buccleuch Street, Barrow, at 4pm on Wednesday.

The mid-terraced commercial property was evacuated before the fire service arrived, as was the procedure for the building.

Firefighters used four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, a thermal imaging camera and a carbon dioxide extinguisher to extinguish the fire while ensuring that no further danger remained for the public.

Crews gave oxygen to one casualty and were at the scene for approximately forty minutes while the premises were made safe.

Fire station manager Paul Milburn said: “The fire happened on Buccleuch Street where an electrical fire had started.

“No-one needed to be rescued from the building as the premises had been evacuated before the fire crews got there.

“The fire was an electrical one and it had occurred on the first floor. It was extinguished using four breathing apparatus wearer and a hose reel jet.

“The fire was extinguished quickly and we were able to stop it from causing any further damage to the building, and there was no more risk to life.

“We were there for almost an hour before we left.”

Mr Milburn said members of the public should remain alert around the potential dangers for electrical appliances.

He added: “With electrical fires, people should check the conditions of appliances and plug sockets.

“If it’s a commercial premise, they require patch testing on a regular basis and electrical safety.

“They should also check the fire precautions and smoke detectors to make sure that they are working.

“We offer smoke alarms, safe and well checks and assessments which are free of charge.”
