Lysander, N.Y. — A homeowner saw the back of their Lysander home on fire and grabbed their animals before leaving Sunday morning, deputies said.

The homeowner heard a pop and checked the back of their home and saw smoke, said Sgt. Jon Seeber, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

After realizing it was a fire the homeowner grabbed their animals before leaving, Seeber said. One animal is missing, he said.

The fire department arrived at 3732 Dutchman Drive at 8:27 a.m., according to the Onondaga County 911 Center. The house had “heavy” flames on the first and second floor, said Belgium Cold Springs Deputy Chief William Massaro.

More than two hours later firefighters were still fighting flames. Two cars were inside the double garage.

“It is proving to be difficult because one car is leaking fuel,” Massaro said.

Every few minutes a fire would pop up in the garage, close to one of the cars. This delayed the fire department from being able to fully extinguish the fire, Massaro said.

Over 10 fire engines were on scene and River Road was closed just outside of the neighborhood.

A preliminary investigation points to a pump for a pool filter system as the cause, Seeber said. The pump was close to the house so it spread, he said.

The home is a complete loss, he said.
