The whitest paint in the world created by Purdue University may help curb global warming

Scientists say that the whitest paint in the world was created in a laboratory at Purdue University. This paint is very white and can ultimately reduce or even eliminate the need for air conditioning.

This paint has now become the whitest paint ever and has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

So why did scientists create such a paint? Facts have proved that breaking the world record is not the researcher’s goal: curbing global warming is.

Ruan Xiulin, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, said in a statement: “When we started this project about seven years ago, we considered saving energy and tackling climate change.”

Researchers say the idea is to make a paint that can reflect sunlight from buildings.

However, according to Purdue University, making this paint truly reflective and also making it truly white. The paint can reflect 98.1% of solar radiation while also emitting infrared heat. Since paint absorbs less heat from the sun than it dissipates, the surface coated with this paint will cool below the ambient temperature without consuming electricity.

Covering approximately 1,000 square feet of roof area with this new paint can generate 10 kilowatts of cooling power. "This is more powerful than the air conditioner used in most houses," Ruan said.

When can I buy it? The whitest paint in the world is expected to be sold to the public

Typical commercial white paint will become warmer rather than colder. Coatings on the market designed for heat dissipation can only reflect 80% to 90% of the sunlight and cannot make the surface cooler than the surrounding environment.

Scientists at Purdue University say that there are two characteristics that make this paint super white: a very high concentration of a compound called barium sulfate-also used in photographic paper and cosmetics-and different particle sizes of barium sulfate in the paint .

According to the press release, Purdue University researchers have partnered with a company to put this ultra-white paint on the market.
